Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Hester Thrale

Once again the Point had its own climate, although outside it was the first signs of winter, inside it was like somewhere in the subtropics. However playing were two bands who were more suited to the cold northern countries than the sweltering ones near the equator.

Opening were Hester Thrale with their epic big sound. They were more suited to indoor venues, like this one, to big outside stages, like at Truck. All four members are very accomplished musicians. All throughout the set they switched places and instruments, with only the drummer staying in the same place for most of the time. However even he, at the end, came up to the front to play the keyboards. Musically they are now very different from their sound as The Full Monty. They are much darker with the keyboard playing a significant part in the music. As at Truck, guitarist/keyboardist/bassist Owen pointed out that his favourite sound on the keyboard was Starburst which he used in a song.

It was almost impossible to fit the whole of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci on stage. They, like Hester Thrale, enjoyed swopping around their instruments, and this caused quite a bit of confusion on stage. Although they have been away for a while, they still played some of the old favourites, like Patio Song, Let's get together (in our minds) and Sweet Johnny. They also played new tracks too. The new material sounds as good as the old material, and still feature the distinctive sound of the band. The bands performance was amazing and full of energy, not something that you would expect if you had just heard the recordings. Euros had so much energy, that although he was reined in by the fact that he had to stay behind the keyboard, he still managed to move around, and was even on the verge of playing his keyboard with his whole body. The only dissapointment was that the band did not play a much in demand encore. The show tonight brought an extra dimension to their music, and for any fans of the band it is essential to see them live just to enjoy the full experience.
