Your Song XIV

Tonight was Stars In Your Eyes Oxford style. Our Matthew Kelly was 'Camp' David from The Bigger the God. But he is by far more talented than the real Matthew Kelly. In between songs he kept the crowd entertained with his own covers, even a song in French, and him eating a banana on stage...
Holy Roman Empire were the first band on. Although they were just like their normal selves, they fitted into the evening very well, so well that it is almost worrying. They gave Blur's Boys and Girls the HRE treatment as well as the Cheers theme tune. Then they added another Radiohead song to their repretoire. No Surprises became a disco/punk song, nothing like the original.
Nothing could prepare us for the shock of the next band. Whispering Bob (minus a few of their usual members) came on dressed in hooded tops, sunglasses and a big cushion stuck behind a jumper. They treated us to a hip hop version of Song 2 (yet another Blur song) and a rap version of That Don't Impress Me Much before shooting each other, and coming back to live to sing/rap Puff Daddy's I'll be missing you. They even managed to bring in some audience participation by splitting the crowds into the 'eastside' and the 'westside'.
The only band to have been able to follow Whispering Bob was Stars of Track and Field. They came on with wigs, false moustaches and very bright shirts. After living out their rawk star fantasies they finished off their 3 songs with Dogmanaut 2000, dedicated to 'the Oxford Mafia Central'. It featured Richly Comic Record's Joel on vocals. The end of the song fitted seemlessly into their short version of 'It's not Unusual'.
After that the evening went a bit downhill. ATL played as a duo, sporting some very unflattering see-through raincoats. Credit must be given to their hats though which had lights in the middle, one wack to switch it on and one more to switch it on. The perfect accessory for any group performing on stage. Maybe ATL secretly want to be the Pet Shop Boys!
Flume gave a performance that was like your standard pub covers group. They played rock songs, but unfortunately they did not have the on stage performance to pull it off like Stars of Track and Field did.
Dustball were unable to perform, which meant that it was up to Overground to round off the evening. They came onstage dressed in feather boas, and this year's fashion item...crap wigs. No-one understood why, until they launched into their first song, Floodlit World by former Your Song stars Ultrasound. The lead singer even had a cushion stuffed up his jumper to look like Tiny. They did not play only Ultrasound songs though. One of the songs they covered was The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony
