Idiot Savant and Moonkat@ The Point, 30/06/00This is probably the way to pack more punters in for a gig. Get two bands with completely different audiences, and you can double your crowd! Therefore tonight, the headline band could almost be the dads of the support band. First were Moonkat, now the only female fronted band left in Oxford, after the peak of 3 last year. They certainly do well where noize is concerned. With new guitarist Richard, there is additional depth in the band, and it shows that they are taking the music part of the band more seriously. The first band that springs to mind, on hearing Moonkat, were the Period Pains. There are some similarities, teenage girls, angst, and songs about their favourite things (in Moonkat's case... a song about Thom Yorke). But there are also other things in the band waiting to get out. One of the best thing about the band is their confidence, in particular Emma's. They're not afraid to say anything and if you disagree, tough luck. One of the many highlights was when she dedicated a song to Greg (see roxford for history), as well as a song entitled 'My English teacher is a Mogwai fan'. Now how kool is that? From watching the naughty teenagers we move on to the dads. Idiot Savant don't really know what they want to be. At the beginning they played a song about daisies, and a waltz, then turned into a sleazy jazz band. Much more entertaining were the fireworks outside. |
